Every Monday and Tuesday I am given the opportunity to work with the bright, young minds of the children at this amazing organization, this amazing community. . . The children are our future, and because of this there is a bright, hopeful future that is happening now. Thank you to CIELO and the families here for giving me this opportunity.
Volunteers are the heartbeat of CIELO. Without them it would difficult if not impossible for us to deliver the services we do. Fortunately, those who dedicate their time and energy to our clients seem to get as much out of it as they put in. In the words of board member Dr. Mary Ferris, “I’ve done different types of service and this type of direct service is the most gratifying. You can really see the person that you’re helping to tutor grow and you can feel the effects of your time. You form a relationship and make a friend.
Who can Volunteer
Anyone can volunteer at CIELO, including high school and college students looking to fulfill community service hour requirements. Being bi-lingual is a plus but not a requirement.
Because many of our students work, most of our classes and programs take place at night between the hours of 6:30 and 8:00 p.m. Those teaching classes need to factor in preparation time as well.
Benefits of Volunteering
Within the past two years, the number of volunteers at CIELO has tripled. Many immigrants who have used our services themselves want to give back once they are more established in society. Becoming a volunteer means joining a large family of like-minded people who enjoy offering support. Aside from that, it’s fun. At the end of many evenings you’ll see groups of students and volunteers talking long after class has ended.
Ways to Volunteer
Teach a Class
If you have expertise in a specific subject that you can share with our students, are a former E.S.L. teacher who likes to connect with different parts of the community or
Tutor a Student
Our Homework Club provides one-on-one tutoring for students in core subjects. Individual attention makes a big difference, especially for those simultaneously learning English.
Provide Child Care
Many of our adult clients have young children and lack the resources to pay for childcare while they are learning English or attending parenting classes. Without volunteers to watch their children, they would be unable to participate.
If you are a source of knowledge in a particular area such as immigration law, how to get along in the workplace, navigating local school systems etc., we would love to hear from you. Our clients can use every resource they can get to understand American society.
As a first-generation Latina who was born to immigrant parents, this place is special to my heart. I felt good every time I tutored and taught English classes. The strong women who come to CIELO have helped me, which I still appreciate so much. This place is a reminder of my parents and myself. It’s a reminder of my family.
